He received nomination for the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his breakthrough role in Ulysses (1967), and was twice nominated for the Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play for his performances in Broadway productions of Staircase (1968) and Mass Appeal (1982).
